All is quiet...
Day 5. Still staying at the hotel. Yesterday (Thursday i.e. "Saturday") we went to three furniture shops in the Al Asbahi area, but found that 99% per cent of the stuff was made from "high-quality MDF". Plus they were really ornate, like what you would see in a Marie Antoinette movie. We only had a couple of hours because shops open really late during Ramadhan (after 2 p.m.) and the driver wasn't available after iftar. Even though we could have gone out again after dinner with one of the standby drivers (shops close at 4 a.m.) , we weren't up for it. Didn't even have the energy to go for the outdoor concert downstairs at the hotel!
At this rate, I bet we'll be in limbo for another week at least.
Today the shops don't open until 4 p.m. and some won't open at all. S is working and I'm at the house now, testing out the internet connection and it sure is better than in Angola! I was supposed to measure the rooms etc. before we try some more furniture shops this afternoon, but the measuring tape we brought is missing.
Haven't gone to the supermarkets yet - maybe later today. Found this useful blog on supermarkets in town.
Friday prayers have started - I can hear the sermons from here. It's a nice change and certainly different from all the places I've lived in since I left home.
Almost forgot: the latest on the elections in Angola. A friend of mine, who works at the company that supplied materials for the elections said CNE (elections organisation) opened new (unplanned) polling stations at the last minute so no papers etc. were available and so it wasn't her company's fault! It would have been worse if not for her boss' organisational skills.
