Sawwaq jadeed
Today we get a new driver. After a year of putting up with the antics of M and thinking a replacement one might be even worse, we decided to call it quits. He has a good heart. But his last, last, last, last, last, last chance was used up a couple of days ago: after the usual morning wake-up call and saying he's on his way, he disappeared. The whole day. Phone switched off. No news.
We thought, what if he had an accident rushing to work? Poor guy, hope he's okay.
The next day (we'd made arrangements for a standby driver), he showed up at work. All smiles. No explanation, except that he was sick and there was no electricity so he couldn't charge his phone and call us.
Unbelievable.
He pulls these stunts; shows up late for work; drives erratically; uses the car for his errands and to shuttle family around; goes home (which is far) to sleep during the day using OUR petrol money; always rushes us because he's got plans; makes a sour face when he has to work the odd evening; lost the car keys; often misplaces his phone so he's unreachable; borrows money and doesn't pay back; is too good to wait so we have to call and wait for HIM; is too good to clean the car himself and so sends S to meetings in a dirty car...and then fills up his timesheet with the maximum overtime possible.
I could carry on but I'll just get worked up.
My cleaner (who along with the guards, I found out, calls him every morning to make sure he's up!) thinks he wants to get fired so he can work for someone else in the company.
And I thought we were doing him a favour.
If he thinks he's going to have it easy with another family, good luck! Get an expat with a non-working wife - you're gonna be driving and waiting for her all day, buddy. A family with kids? Even better. Get a bachelor expat, he's gonna be out all night AND expect you to pick him up at 7am the next day AND you'll be doing his shopping. Otherwise, you'll be a standby driver, having to show up at work and wait all day to earn your keep...and no free overtime.
Ma'asalama.
